Signs Of A Mole In Your Yard

The most obvious sign would be if you actually saw a mole with your own eyes. Moles are strange-looking creatures with pointed muzzles, tiny eyes, and bodies about the size of a potato, these unique creatures use their wide flipper-like front paws to tunnel through dirt-eating up bugs and insects along the way.

A sure sign you have attracted a mole is sinking earth beneath your feet. When a mole isn’t searching for food, it is excavating soil and making tunnels. This will cause the lawn to sink or squish when you cross paths with a place the mole has wandered.

However, since moles are nocturnal and spend most of their time underground, most people don’t actually see moles in their lawn. Instead, the most common and recognizable sign of a mole is underground tunneling visible on the surface. Moles feed on grubs and other insects, tunneling through dirt to catch them. And while these are often the kind of grubs that can damage your lawn, in order to get to the grubs, the tunnels they dig create raised areas and mounds throughout your yard which loosens dirt and can easily cause lasting damage in your lawn.

So while eliminating grubs or other bugs that damage your lawn may sound like a good option, when it comes to the cost of tunnels and surface damage, it may not be the best idea to let moles hang around.

What Other Damage Can a Mole Cause?

Along with the surface damage and raised areas, secondary pests can also come along and use the tunnels moles leave behind. Known to use the tunnels as transportation, moles and mice will often walk along the tunnels eating seeds and plant roots in your yard. While moles may operate below the surface, their presence can have extremely damaging effects on your lawn above the surface. While moles don’t actually eat plants, meaning they aren’t eating your grass, their damage is usually caused by the tunnels they dig in your lawn while looking for more worms to eat!

How to Get Rid of Moles in Your Lawn

Because moles like moist soil, overly damp lawns make it easy for them to move around. Discourage mole activity by improving soil drainage for a dryer yard.
